Zimbabwean opposition leader arrested in Pretoria over explosives

Zimbabwean opposition leader Job Sikhala has been arrested in Pretoria after police allegedly found explosives in his vehicle.

Sikhala, a vocal critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s bid for another term, is being held at a police station in the South African capital.

Police said they acted on a tip-off about a Ford Fiesta suspected of transporting explosives.

When officers stopped the vehicle, they reportedly found 26 blasting cartridges and 15 capped fuse connectors.

Zimbabwe opposition leader Sikhala, another man charged

Two men, aged 78 and 53, have been charged with illegal possession of explosives.

They are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

Photos circulating online show Sikhala being handcuffed by a police officer in civilian clothing and later sitting on a roadside steel barrier beside an elderly man believed to have been in the car with him.

Another image shows what appears to be explosives wrapped in a yellow plastic bag.
