Zimbabwean self-proclaimed prophet Walter Magaya, who allegedly used fake UNISA qualifications, appeared in court today facing charges of rape and fraud.

His court appearance follows his Saturday morning arrest by a specialised Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) team in Harare.

Prophet Magaya arrested

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the preacher was taken into custody.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Walter Magaya in connection with several reports of rape and fraud,” he said.

Nyathi said police will release more information as investigations continue.

The dramatic arrest marks a sharp fall from grace for the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries founder.

Magaya was once celebrated as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential religious figures.

H Metro reported that Magaya’s detention meant he missed his usual Sunday church service, leaving thousands of followers shocked and seeking answers.

Today, Magaya appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court under heavy security, drawing large crowds of curious onlookers and loyal followers.

Prophet Magaya’s controversy

Magaya gained prominence in the early 2010s through his large gatherings and televised healing sessions. He has faced controversy in recent years over his conduct.

This includes alleged false claims of academic credentials from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Magaya also drew widespread criticism and faced arrest after claiming to have discovered a herbal cure for HIV and cancer.

The Ministry of Health later forced him to retract his statements, warning that such claims were misleading and dangerous.

Over the years, the public has criticised Magaya for flaunting wealth and staging dramatic healing sessions. Many have described them as fake miracles designed to attract followers and donations.
