YouTuber missed flight and sent to hospital after his Samsung ring battery swelled on finger

YouTuber Daniel Rotar who heads up technology YouTube channel ZONEofTECH has gone viral after reporting that the battery of his Samsung Galaxy Ring started swelling whilst it was on his finger, resulting in an emergency hospital situation. Samsung has now responded to the situation and has said it is is in contact with Rotar to investigate further. Rotar documented the situation and how it escalated in a series of tweets that have now gone viral.

‘This is not good’

In a post that’s now had over 16 million views on X, Daniel Rotar posted pictures of his finger after cleaning the Samsung Galaxy Ring he had on was swelling. A Samsung Galaxy Ring is worn to serve the same purpose as a smart watch and monitors your health and activity levels. You are encouraged to wear it at all times.

Rotar explained “Ahh this is not good. My Samsung Galaxy Ring’s battery started swelling. Whilst it’s on my finger. And whilst I’m about to board a flight. Now I cannot take it off and this thing hurts.” He then asked for help from Samsung official channels on X.

The YouTuber then posted an update with the ring off his finger and provided an update. You can visually see in the images the battery has malfunctioned. Rotar said he was denied boarding the flight because of the ring and had to pay for a hotel instead. He was sent to the hospital as an emergency to get the ring off.

Rotar said “Won’t be wearing a smart ring ever again.”

He was also asked on X what he thinks might have caused it, to which he guessed “My guess? Some or all of the below” and listed “Heat from Hawaii, salt water, being on two flights before – a previously problematic battery (I know this was for sure an issue, because the battery life has been very poor for months before).”

This afternoon, Rotar provided a further update saying Samsung refunded his hotel, got him home and collected the ring for further investigation.

Samsung has now given a statement

After the story went viral, Samsung told Engadget in a statement: “”The safety of our customers is a top priority and we are in direct contact with this user to learn more about their concerns. While experiences like this are extremely rare, there are a few ways to attempt removing a stuck ring, including soap and water – or submerging your hand in cold water. If these methods do not work, additional information is provided on our Samsung Support page.”
