Yellow level 2 warning for thunderstorms issued for Gauteng

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of Gauteng today and tomorrow, with the possibility of localised flooding and strong winds.

The thunderstorm warning affects the southern parts of Gauteng, including areas that are likely to experience heavy downpours, minor hail, and strong, damaging winds. The weather service cautioned motorists and residents to be alert for flooding in low-lying areas, slippery roads, and reduced visibility.

Forecaster Mpho Rasimphi said the conditions are expected to be intense this afternoon and into the night.

“Localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas, and bridges is possible, along with hail and damaging winds,” Rasimphi warned.

Cooler conditions and safety advice for Gauteng residents

While temperatures are expected to remain warm during the day, cooler evening conditions are likely across most of Gauteng. Rasimphi urged residents to exercise caution, particularly during evening commutes.

“Please be careful when travelling, especially where fast-flowing streams may cross roads. Visibility could be reduced, and roads may become slippery,” he advised.

The weather service also encouraged residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and to secure outdoor items that strong winds could damage.

Weather outlook

Friday is expected to bring some relief, with dry conditions returning to most parts of Gauteng. However, the SAWS emphasised the need for continued vigilance until the storm system passes.
