South Africa has been hit by severe rainfall in recent weeks, leading the SA Weather Service to issue several alerts, including a number of yellow warnings.
For many people, the colour-coded system can be confusing. What does a yellow alert actually mean? How serious is it and at what point should we start adjusting our daily routines?
To get clarity, Sizwe Dhlomo spoke to SA Weather Service meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela, who unpacked how the warning system works and what each colour represents.
Thobela explained that the alerts are designed to show not only the intensity of the weather, but also the expected impact on communities. This includes everything from travel delays to the potential for damage to homes and infrastructure.
With extreme weather events becoming more common, understanding these alerts matters more than ever.
