But The Nuke was at his brilliant best as he defeated the talented Dutchman 2-0 after an enthralling opening set.
Van Gerwen also gets his campaign underway this evening against Dirk van Duijvenbode in an all-Dutch clash.
Later, defending champion Mike De Decker goes head-to-head with fan’s favourite Peter Wright as they look to join the likes of Luke Humphries and Stephen Bunting in round two.
