Windy coastlines and scattered showers expected in Eastern Cape

An onshore flow from the ocean continues to influence weather patterns along the Eastern Cape coastline, bringing moisture, cloud cover and a chance of showers. Coastal areas may experience intense, gusty winds as pressure gradients tighten.

Mpho Rasimphi, a forecaster, explained the setup clearly.

“That onshore flow is bringing moisture from the ocean, stretching into the Eastern Cape and resulting in windy conditions,” he said.

The South African Weather Service has indicated a 30% chance of showers, particularly along coastal towns and adjacent interior areas.

Temperatures remain mild to warm in the Eastern Cape

Daytime temperatures across the province will stay moderate. Gqeberha is expected to reach a high of around 24°C, while East London is expected to peak near 26°C. Mthatha could see warmer conditions, reaching up to 29°C.

“It will be a warm day over most parts of the Eastern Cape, but the wind will play a significant role in how conditions feel,” Rasimphi said.

While rainfall amounts are not expected to be widespread, sudden showers could briefly impact traffic and outdoor plans.

Marine and coastal safety concerns

The strongest impacts are expected along the coast, where rough seas and strong winds may pose challenges for small vessels and beachgoers.

“We do have a warning for some damaging winds and waves as we move towards the coast, so people heading to the waters must be careful,” Rasimphi warned.

Fishermen, sailors and coastal residents are advised to monitor weather updates closely and avoid unnecessary exposure to hazardous marine conditions.
