WhatsApp rolls out key new features for South African users

WhatsApp is introducing a wave of new updates for South African users, including easier access to beta features, expanded iPhone functionality, and a dedicated Apple Watch app – signalling the platform’s ongoing push to strengthen its position as the country’s most widely used messaging service.

The updates come as WhatsApp continues refining its tools to meet the needs of a market where instant messaging is deeply embedded in daily communication.

Local research firm Yazi reports that WhatsApp has an astonishing 93.9% penetration rate among South Africa’s internet users, making it essential for both personal and business communication.

Beta testing gets easier: No more waiting lists

For years, many South Africans have been unable to join the WhatsApp beta programme on the Google Play Store because enrolment has been full.

Now, WhatsApp is testing a built-in “Early access to features” section inside the app’s settings menu.

According to WABetaInfo – a trusted source for early WhatsApp developments – this new toggle lets users access the same beta builds previously available only through the Play Store.

The move simplifies testing and gives more South Africans the chance to try upcoming features before they officially roll out.

WhatsApp is also quietly testing beta features for WhatsApp Web, although this remains limited to select users. Those with access can find the option under the platform’s Help menu.

Major updates for iPhone users

iPhone users are set to benefit from one of WhatsApp’s most-requested upgrades: multi-account support.

The feature allows up to two phone numbers to be used within the same app – ideal for users who juggle personal and business communication on a single device.

It is already live for iOS beta testers and is gradually becoming available on the stable version of the app.

While this is new for iPhone users, Android devices have supported multi-account functionality since late 2023.

Many Android manufacturers also offer built-in cloning tools that allow users to run three or more WhatsApp accounts on one phone.

WhatsApp launches on Apple Watch

Another notable addition is the official WhatsApp Apple Watch app, designed to improve messaging accessibility on the go.

Apple Watch users can now:

  • send and receive voice messages
  • view chat history
  • reply with emojis
  • receive call notifications
  • stay connected without reaching for their phones

The smartwatch app marks WhatsApp’s most significant expansion into wearables to date.

Smaller updates shaping a smoother experience

Beyond the headline features, WhatsApp is testing several smaller enhancements:

  • A dynamic About section for more flexible profile information
  • Personalised group member tags to reduce confusion in large groups
  • Improved activity notifications for channel administrators

Many of these tools remain in development, but they highlight WhatsApp’s broader focus on refining user control and communication clarity.

A look ahead: What this means for South Africa

As competing platforms like Telegram, Signal and Messenger continue to evolve, WhatsApp’s strategy remains clear: strengthen reliability, expand device support and give users more flexibility.

The introduction of easier beta access, multi-account support on iOS, and smartwatch compatibility suggests a long-term push to maintain dominance in the South African market – a space where WhatsApp is already almost unmatched.

With more updates on the horizon, South Africans can expect WhatsApp to continue shaping how the country communicates.
