Willem Alberts only hung up his boots in 2024, with the abrasive flanker – well known as the ‘bone collector’ – having called it a day after the Lions were knocked out of the URC playoff race that season.

During a memorable career, Alberts played 43 Tests and two non-Tests for the Springboks (2010-2016), scoring 35 points including a try on debut against Wales, while making 124 appearances for the Lions (in various competitions between 2005 and 2024).

The former pupil of Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp who represented UP-Tuks, also played 94 games for the Sharks (2013-2015) – with whom he won the Currie Cup twice – and 79 games for Stade Francais in France (2015-2019). He scored 192 points in his 342 first-class games.

Since stepping away from the game, Alberts has focused on transitioning into a life centred around his long-standing passions for agriculture and business.

The 41-year-old quite recently started a new journey specifically in the agricultural sector with a company called eXgro SA.

According to LinkedIn, eXgro “provides farmers with an integrated approach to optimising their production input supply to increase profits while keeping up with consumers’ preferences with regards to food safety, quality and environmental sustainability”.

It’s understood that Alberts fulfils a role as a Marketing Specialist, but is readily involved in numerous areas of the business.

Away from work, Alberts is known as a family man, avid golfer and quite the social media character
