Western Cape sees spike in drunk driving arrests ahead of festive season

The Western Cape is gearing up for a challenging festive season after 24 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in a single week.

The arrests were recorded during an extensive enforcement blitz by Provincial Traffic Services between 17 and 23 November 2025, which saw officers conduct 168 integrated roadblocks and checkpoints across the province.

Over 30 000 Vehicles Stopped in Province-Wide Operation

During the week-long operation, authorities stopped and examined more than 30 000 vehicles, issuing over 9 000 fines for transgressions ranging from driver behaviour to vehicle roadworthiness.

Officials also flagged 200 speeding incidents, underscoring the ongoing concerns over reckless driving heading into the holiday season.

46 Arrests for Multiple Offences

In total, law enforcement made 46 arrests between 17 and 23 November.

These included:

  • 24 for driving under the influence of alcohol
  • 3 for reckless and negligent driving
  • 6 for goods overloading
  • 6 for possession of fraudulent documentation
  • 3 for undocumented persons
  • 1 for wilful damage or tampering with a vehicle
  • 1 for bribery
  • 1 for obstructing a traffic officer
  • 1 for threatening a traffic officer

Officials Condemn Rising Drunk Driving Cases

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku voiced serious concern over the spike in alcohol-related offences.

“Every driver who gets behind the wheel after drinking is a danger not only to themselves but to every person on the road. As we approach the festive season, we are intensifying enforcement to ensure that law-abiding road users can travel safely,” Sileku said.

“Driving under the influence will not be tolerated, and we will continue to take decisive action against offenders.”

Echoing his warning, Maxine Bezuidenhout, chief director of Traffic Management, urged motorists to make responsible choices.

“The high number of drunk driving arrests is deeply concerning. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgement and slow reaction times. Our officers will continue to take firm action against anyone who chooses to endanger others,” she said.

Motorists Urged to Plan Ahead This Festive Season

With family gatherings, parties and celebrations expected to increase in the coming weeks, officials are encouraging road users to adopt safe alternatives, including:

  • Using e-hailing services or metered taxis
  • Appointing a sober designated driver
  • Staying overnight after social events
  • Asking a trusted friend or family member for a lift
  • Refusing to travel with anyone who has consumed alcohol

Sileku reaffirmed that road safety is a shared responsibility, calling on all motorists to help prevent avoidable deaths and injuries this festive season.
