The upcoming water cuts in the West of Johannesburg are a result of Rand Water beginning the “third phase” of planned maintenance on its bulk supply system.
According to Johannesburg Water (JW), the 54-hour maintenance is scheduled to start at 04:00 on 6 January and will continue until 08:00 on Thursday, 8 January.
During this period, isolation meters on key bulk supply pipelines will be replaced. This process will significantly affect water availability in several reservoirs and direct-feed areas.
Johannesburg Water warned that affected systems will gradually decline until empty, resulting in poor water pressure or no water at all in some areas.
Properties that rely on direct feeds are expected to be without water for most of the maintenance window, although they are usually the first to recover once pumping resumes.
Even after the work is completed, residents should not expect an immediate return to normal supply. The utility said it could take between three and five days for impacted systems to fully recover.

What residents should do
Johannesburg Water said alternative water supply arrangements will be made available in all affected areas. West Rand residents are encouraged to plan ahead by storing water responsibly before the maintenance begins.
“Due to the interconnected nature of the systems, a secondary impact may occur at the other neighbouring areas,” JW added.
“We will keep customers informed through regular updates shared across multiple platforms, including ward councilor groups, for the duration of the Rand Water planned maintenance work.”
