WEATHER | Disaster authorities in KwaZulu-Natal on high alert

Disaster management authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert as persistent rainfall continues to affect northern parts of the province, raising concerns about flooding and infrastructure damage.

The KwaZulu-Natal Disaster Management Centre is closely monitoring the situation following a South African Weather Service (SAWS) warning for disruptive rainfall this weekend, issued amid ongoing wet conditions.

The provincial Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Department said several areas, including Umhlabuyalingana, Nongoma and Jozini, are already under pressure as rising water levels impact roads and low-lying bridges.

Communities at Risk

CoGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said severe weather has resulted in widespread flooding, placing multiple communities at risk.

“In these areas, severe heavy rains have caused widespread flooding, with a number of communities already under threat of continued flooding,” Mzila said.

He added that the provincial disaster management centre is working closely with municipalities and relevant state agencies to monitor weather conditions and coordinate response efforts aimed at ensuring community safety.

Safety Warning Issued

Residents in affected areas have been urged to exercise caution and follow safety protocols, particularly near flooded roads, bridges and low-lying areas.

“Residents are urged to follow safety protocols and ensure that they do not endanger themselves or their families,” Mzila said.

Authorities have warned that conditions could deteriorate further if rainfall persists, and communities are encouraged to remain alert and heed any evacuation or safety notices that may be issued.

Disaster management teams remain on standby as weather conditions continue to be assessed.
