WATCH | Major 33-vehicle pile-up shuts down R28 in Krugersdorp

A 33-vehicle collision brought traffic to a standstill on the R28 in Krugersdorp, with authorities urging motorists to steer clear of the area and seek alternative routes.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that the crash occurred at around 08:30 near the N14 and Hendrick Potgieter intersection, when a Volvo Interlink truck carrying animal feed ploughed into stationary traffic.

Chain-reaction

The impact triggered a chain-reaction pile-up involving dozens of cars and trucks.

Several people sustained minor injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.

No fatalities have been reported.

Fihla said emergency crews had cleared the wrecked vehicles from the roadway, but warned that cleanup operations and safety inspections were still under way.

Residual delays are expected on the R28, particularly near the Silverstar Casino interchange, as authorities continue clearing debris.

A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.

Videos circulating on social media show chaotic scenes with damaged vehicles scattered across the road, some pushed off the roadway.

According to an eyewitness, two truck drivers allegedly lost control, leading to the devastating pile-up.

Road Closures Across Johannesburg

The incident comes as Johannesburg experiences heavy traffic disruptions due to increased convoy movements ahead of events in the Nasrec precinct.

Rolling closures have been implemented across major routes, including:

  • N1 between Atterbury Road and Rand Show Road
  • N3 North and South flyovers
  • N12 from Elands Interchange to Diepkloof Interchange
  • M1 between Buccleuch Interchange and Golden Highway
  • R21 South, between Atlas Road and Voortrekker Road
  • R24/N12 interchange, affecting R24 West and the N12 West junction

Travellers heading to OR Tambo International Airport are urged to allow extra time to avoid delays.

Authorities continue to monitor traffic flow and have deployed additional law-enforcement personnel across the city.
