Vehicle plunges 100m off Chapman’s Peak onto rocks below

A rescue operation is underway on Chapman’s Peak Drive after a vehicle plunged approximately 100 metres down a cliff on the Noordhoek side of the scenic route on Sunday.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Simoney Regter confirmed that one patient was extracted from the wreckage by rescue teams and transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.

A second individual was assessed and treated at the scene.

Large-scale response

According to emergency officials, the vehicle appears to have veered off the roadway before crashing onto rocks below, prompting a large-scale response from multiple rescue and emergency services.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by the steep cliff face and unstable terrain, with teams working under challenging conditions to secure the scene and assist the victims.

The condition of the injured person transported to hospital has not yet been disclosed.

Closed to traffic

Chapman’s Peak Drive has been closed to traffic while the rescue operation continues. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Authorities have called on the public to remain patient and allow emergency services to carry out their work without interference.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is expected to begin once the scene has been fully secured.

Has Chapman’s Peak Drive become too dangerous with narrow roads and vehicle and cyclists vying for space?
