  • The City of Tshwane has announced a mandatory four-hour power shutdown due to urgent maintenance at the Capital Park Substation.
  • The power cut is scheduled for this Saturday, from 9 am to 1 pm, affecting dozens of suburbs.
  • The maintenance is deemed critical and unavoidable to repair a major transformer component and prevent a potentially catastrophic network breakdown.

Thousands of homes and businesses across the City of Tshwane are facing a four-hour power outage this Saturday as the municipality undertakes urgent maintenance to safeguard the stability of its electricity network.

The City’s Energy and Electricity Business Unit confirmed the planned shutdown will affect all areas supplied by the Capital Park Substation. The cut is scheduled to run from 9am until 1pm.

The municipality stressed that the work is essential to prevent a potentially catastrophic failure of key infrastructure. City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo explained that technicians need to urgently work on the 132/11kV – 35MVA power transformer cable end box.

“This work is necessary to maintain the integrity of the transformer and ensure safe, reliable electricity supply in the long term,” Mashigo stated, highlighting the critical nature of the repair.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but the maintenance is critical to prevent a major breakdown that could affect the wider network.”

The power interruption is unavoidable as the Capital Park Substation currently lacks a backup transformer to provide an alternative supply during maintenance due to an abnormal network load.

Affected Areas

A large swathe of the city will be impacted, including:

  • Capital Park
  • Theresapark
  • Mountain View
  • Ninapark

Call for Precaution

Residents and businesses within these areas are urged to take necessary precautions to minimise disruption. Mashigo advised the public to plan accordingly, ensure all sensitive electronic equipment is switched off, and be prepared for the four-hour outage.

The City has assured the community that teams will be working diligently to complete the maintenance and that the electricity supply will be restored immediately after the work is finished, aiming to keep within the scheduled timeframe.
