Lancaster’s community organisation, Love Lancaster, has put together some brilliant events that you won’t want to miss this Michaelmas Term.
If you want to start experiencing Lancaster life a little more, make sure you take a look at this list of upcoming events happening, which might pique some interest – especially for you, freshers! This is a wonderful way to get involved and to give students, especially those of you who are new to the north, a chance to feel included and become further settled into the community.
Lancaster Live
Lancaster Live, commencing on the weekend of the 9th of October, features various live music performances, from solo artists to bands, which are held in Lancaster City Centre, spread over 50 venues, as well as a schedule of acts from local bands performing for free in Market Square, making sure that everyone can enjoy the music.
The various surrounding venues in Lancaster, where some performances are taking place are all accessible by bus, so if you’re worried because you live on campus that you won’t be able to see any acts you’re interested in, the buses are reliable and will get you to most of the venues that are listed and get you back to campus when the events end.
So if you love to dance and listen to tunes, make sure to check it out!
Breathing Colour Textile Show
Located in Williamson Park and running from the 16th to 19th October, is The British Textile Biennial, where Margo Selby’s textile, Breathing Colour, will be hanging.
This textile piece of artwork was made in a residency at Standfast and Barracks, which is renowned for its outstanding textile printing legacy and has cultivated this textile art piece, which uses site-responsive textile sculpture to evoke movements of cloth throughout their factory, which then travels through waves and folds through the machinery.
So, if you’re into fashion or arts and crafts, you might like to check this out. This textile installation is a celebration which evokes immersive colours and is sure to lift your spirits up
Lancaster Literature Festival – LitFest
If you’re a bookworm or interested in the written word, Lancaster’s LitFest is back for the Autumn, from the 17th October until the 18th November. This event is volunteer-run and helps support local authors.
It is a collection of various shows and talks that you can attend by booking, with a small fee, either in person or virtually (mainly held at The Storey), to gain insight into books, poetry, and all things literature.
LitFest also welcomes students from the English Literature and Creative Writing courses at Lancaster University to get involved, as some of the lecturers at Lancaster are featured patrons and contributors.
Light Up Lancaster
A classic event returning on November 6th, 7th and 8th, that is dearly loved among the community, is Light Up Lancaster. This immersive and beautiful light display invites audiences to explore a mystical light-up trail throughout the city, where you can discover artworks made from light and glorious installations on the streets of Lancaster.
The lights displayed all around include concepts such as video mapping, creative projection, music, dance and illusions to make you wonder. Light Up Lancaster is free to attend and view; it will be visible from 5 pm until 10 pm on the days listed. Also, while you’re out admiring the lighting, there will also be a food market happening in the Market Square, so you can grab a bite to eat while enjoying looking at the beautiful illuminations.
These are the events we think are the best this term that Love Lancaster has organised; however, if you head over to their website at https://lancasterandmorecambebay.com/whats-on, you can find a whole range of other events happening this term that might be up your street!
