Unstable weather reaches the Eastern Cape interior

The Eastern Cape faces deteriorating weather conditions as moisture from a northern low-pressure system spreads into central and southern regions. Forecasters warn of thunderstorms, reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions, particularly inland.

Mpho Rasimphi said the province falls under a Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning.

“We are talking about possibilities of damage to settlements, dangerous driving conditions and lightning over the northern interior of the Eastern Cape,” he said.

Visibility concerns and morning fog in Eastern Cape

In addition to storms, residents should expect fog and mist during early morning hours.

“We are seeing moisture stretching into the interior of the Eastern Cape, which means visibility will be reduced in the morning,” Rasimphi explained.

These conditions could affect commuters and long-distance transport routes linking the province to the Free State and North West.

Wind and temperature outlook

Strong and potentially damaging winds may develop further west, extending towards the Northern Cape.

“We do expect strong, damaging winds overnight, which may also increase fire danger in dry areas,” Rasimphi said.

Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures will remain mild to warm during the day. Coastal areas can expect cloudy conditions, while inland regions experience brief sunny intervals between storms.

Residents are advised to secure structures, avoid open fields during thunderstorms, and stay informed through official weather alerts.
