Tyler the Creator’s old tweets are putting his offensive past in the spotlight

Tyler, the Creator has had a great year, off the back of the release of his newest album and tour. But the rapper is now under fire after old tweets and images of his have found their way back on everyone’s timelines.

The resurfaced tweets are mostly from 2010 and 2011.  They include praise for controversial figures like R. Kelly and Diddy, as well as problematic statements about black history month. This all came to light after his D’Angelo tribute on Instagram attracted some comments that caused controversy across social media.

What actually started all of this?

Tyler is in a super successful era of his career. He was just announced as the All Points East headliner for the entire weekend next year – the first time the festival has had one headliner. He’s also just about to make his acting debut alongside Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme.

Last week, beloved R&B legend D’Angelo passed away at just 51 years old. Lots of musicians who were inspired by him posted heartfelt tributes, including Tyler.

Under the comment section of his D’Angelo tribute, which he has now turned off, people were being very insensitive. Instead of commenting appreciation for D’Angelo, people were making jokes about not knowing who he is and asking Tyler when the next album would drop.

After this, Tyler liked an X post calling out his followers and their attitude towards black music.

“Tyler’s fanbase hate black music despite Tyler himself having a very deep love and appreciation for it,” the tweet said..

After this, people started sharing exactly how Tyler got his fanbase – through his old, edgy persona.

What did Tyler the Creator’s old tweets say?

Back in 2011, Tyler was tweeting just about anything. His old tweets include calling R. Kelly “swagged out”, showing love to Diddy and more.

Old pictures allegedly show Tyler in a KKK costume pretending to lynch a black man, and even his old merch is resurfacing, which featured blackface caricatures.

According to Complex, Tyler has allegedly been deleting tweets, including one where he said he hated Andre from Victorious. He was about 20 years old when the majority of these tweets were posted.

It’s not the first time Tyler has been in hot water because of his past – he was actually banned from entering the UK because of his offensive song lyrics for four years .

Besides seemingly deleting tweets, Tyler hasn’t publicly acknowledged this massive wave of backlash.

Tyler, the Creator was contacted for comment.
