TUI reveals plans to relaunch flights from closed UK airport – three years after shutting

TUI has confirmed that they are in talks to return to an airport if it is able to reopen next year.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport was forced to shut back in 2022 due to financial difficulties, with TUI operating the last flight.

However, following a huge campaign and government backing it is finally set to reopen.

When it comes to airlines, TUI has said they could relaunch their flights – which once connected the airport to destinations including Alicante, Malaga and Tenerife.

TUI boss Neil Swanson said at the ABTA conference in Majorca according to Travel Gossip: “Clearly that is something we are talking about.

“We were in there before, it is part of an ongoing discussion.”

It’s not just TUI that could launch flights from the airport.

Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme Labour MP Lee Pitcher said earlier this year that they were also in talks with Ryanair.

He said: “I chaired a positive DSA Action Group meeting with Ryanair, represented by their Head of Public Affairs.

“We discussed Ryanair’s position on Doncaster Sheffield Airport — and I’m pleased that they’ve agreed to be introduced to Fly Doncaster, the company that will manage the airport in partnership with international operator Munich International.”

Wizz Air – who also previously flew from the airport – have not expressed any decisions made to return to the airport.

And Jet2 boss Steve Heapy also said at the ABTA conference that they were “talking to a lot of airports all the time” but would not confirm any moves for Doncaster Sheffield.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has expressed desires to be able to open as soon as next year.

However, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard warned that this is unlikely, and instead is likely to be only cargo flights in 2027.

This could then be followed by passengers flights in 2028.

Earlier this year, a £160million package to reopen the runways was given the go-ahead.

Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire‘s Mayor, and the four council leaders in South Yorkshire approved the £160million package to re-open the runways.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves said: “The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a huge milestone for communities and business across South Yorkshire, delivering better connections, jobs and economic growth.”

Doncaster Sheffield Airport first opened in 2005, under the name Robin Hood Airport.

This then changed to the current name in 2016.

It offered flights from the UK to 50 destinations in Europe, which also included Paris, Berlin and Dubrovnik.

Here is another UK airport that wants to reopen.
