  • Severe storms have caused widespread power outages in Tshwane, with Region 3 the most affected.
  • The city has deployed extra teams to speed up restoration and has already resolved more than 3 500 outages.
  • Residents are urged to remain patient as technicians work to stabilise the remaining areas.

The City of Tshwane has assured residents that it is working around the clock to attend to multiple power outages caused by heavy downpours that wreaked havoc in some parts of Pretoria over the past few days.

The severe weather conditions caused extensive damage to electricity infrastructure, uprooted trees, and overstretched the city’s technicians as they strive to respond to all reported outages.

Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba says that since the start of the rainfall on Sunday, 30 November 2025, the city, registered 84 medium-voltage or major outages across the city, with Region 3 being the hardest hit, accounting for 70% of them.

“Region 3 incorporates the CBD, Pretoria West and parts of Pretoria East. A total of 5 556 block or single outages were reported throughout the city’s seven regions. More than 4 000 of these outages were reported in Region 3, representing 78% of the total number of single outages,” said Bokaba.

To fast-track restoration efforts in Region 3, the city has withdrawn six teams from the Amabutho Public Lighting Programme to support the regional team and accelerate the restoration process.

Bokaba says the teams have so far resolved just over 3 500 outages and continue to work tirelessly to restore power to the remaining areas as swiftly as possible.

“It is encouraging to note that the majority of the regions have now stabilised, and technicians are able to resolve less-complex outages within 24 hours after being reported.

The city has once again apologised for any inconvenience caused by the extended outages and pleads for patience from the affected customers.

“Customers will be regularly updated on the latest developments,” he said.
