Thunderstorms and heavy downpours to sweep across Gauteng

Gauteng residents should prepare for scattered thundershowers and possible severe weather as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts a wet and stormy start to the weekend. The expected conditions may bring heavy rain, strong winds, and isolated hail across the province.

Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said, “We are expecting isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northeastern parts, becoming scattered over Mpumalanga into Gauteng and southern Limpopo.”

She added that the storms could bring “heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, and small hail in some areas.”

Fog and reduced visibility in the early hours in Gauteng

Motorists have been urged to take precautions during early morning commutes, as fog patches are expected to form in several parts of the province.

Zonke warned, “Those fog patches are expected to reduce visibility to less than a kilometre in places, so please do take caution if you are driving early tomorrow morning.”

Authorities have advised drivers to maintain a safe following distance and use fog lights where necessary to prevent accidents during low visibility conditions.

Residents advised to stay alert

The weather service also cautioned that high fire danger conditions are expected over parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, but Gauteng’s main concern remains thunderstorms.

Zonke urged residents to “avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and take safety measures against lightning.”

Temperatures in Gauteng are expected to range between 12°C overnight and 26°C during the day, with cooler conditions in the northern areas.
