The discussion noted a predictable cycle: widespread public condemnation after the footage emerges, followed by a swift return to silence once the initial shock wears off.
Khala explained how when a bullying incident is publicised via a viral video, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and relevant Provincial Education Departments take swift action.
This often includes launching a thorough investigation, ensuring disciplinary processes are immediately implemented by the school (in line with the Learner Code of Conduct), and crucially, providing psycho-social support and counselling for the victim and, in some cases, the perpetrator.
