The creepy reason and meaning behind why Ed Gein wore a red plaid jacket before murders

There’s a creepy reason behind why Ed Gein always wore a red plaid jacket in the most heinous scenes in The Ed Gein Story on Netflix. Pretty much every scene in the show was gruesome, but when Gein put on his red plaid shirt style jacket, you knew bad scenes would follow.

Killer Ed Gein was active in Plainfield, Wisconsin, from 1947 to 1957. He murdered two women, and was also a grave robber. He dug up women from cemeteries in his local area, and kept them in his home. Gein used skin from their bodies as masks, and made household objects out the skin too.

The Netflix series showed all of this graphically. And now people are picking up on two colours used throughout to show us Ed Gein’s state of mind. Green was a theme throughout, and was used to represent to the audience when Ed Gein was losing his mind. One episode was literally titled “Green” and was when Gein killed Bernice Worden. Gein saw her blood as green.

The second colour used to represent something deeper was red. Someone on TikTok pointed it out, and again, it’s to do with Ed Gein’s mental health.

“Have you noticed Ed wears a red plaid shirt every time before he kills someone,” the post said. “Ed’s other personality is represented by all people who wear red. Whether in hallucinations or reality.” The post noted Ed wore the same jacket every time he killed someone, or dismembered a body, or dug up a grave.

“It’s obvious that green and red have special meanings,” the post continued. It then went on to point out the green blood when Bernice was killed. Green was also used during hallucination scenes when Ed Gein was in hospital, and when he saw war criminal Ilse Koch. “Green is Ed’s fantasy, whereas red is Ed’s reality,” the post said.

How we can really prove this theory is true, is that it even happened once Ed was in the hospital. He imagined killing a nurse, and beforehand put on his signature plaid jacket, and grabbed a chainsaw from a store cupboard. The rest, well, you remember how horrific it was.

I wish I’d known this before watching, so I could have looked away!
