A nineteen-year-old man has been tragically killed and three others severely injured in Diepkloof following an apparent mob attack in the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident has raised serious concerns about vigilantism in the community.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers were called to a complaint regarding “vigilantism” in Diepkloof just after 6 am. Upon arrival, they discovered a group of four young men who had allegedly been targeted by members of the community.
“Upon arrival, that’s where they [police] found these four men. One of them was unfortunately declared dead,” Nevhuhulwi stated.
She confirmed that all four had suffered gunshot wounds. The three injured victims are currently receiving urgent medical treatment in hospital.
The spokesperson described a gruesome scene, noting that the victims were found stripped naked and bearing extensive injuries.
“When the police came here, they found all the victims were stripped naked, and there was a group of community members,” Nevhuhulwi explained.
Due to the presence of a large crowd of residents, Public Order Police (POP) were called to the scene to maintain control and restore order following the violent episode.
The motive for the horrific attack remains unclear and is currently the subject of an intense police investigation. .
The investigation has officially been registered as a case of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
