#TeamCardiff just raised £30,000 for university research at the Cardiff Half Marathon

Cardiff University’s #TeamCardiff has just raised £30,000 for university research at the Cardiff Half Marathon.

Last weekend, over 100 students, staff and alumni set off to run 13.1 miles, aiming to raise money for neuroscience, mental health and cancer research.

On October 5th, 27,500 runners took part in the famous Cardiff Half Marathon, which is the second largest of its kind in the UK. The route saw competitors loop around Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay.

Since 2003, the event has evolved through a change of sponsors and routes, but one constant has remained: The energy from participants and spectators.

Blessed with some rare Cardiff sunshine, runners took part for a variety of reasons, whether for their health, to raise awareness for a dedicated charity, or just for fun.

But, the runners with #TeamCardiff had a clear aim for their race: Raising an impressive £30,000.

The University of Cardiff reports that the money will now go towards research aiming to help those with a range of conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, depression and schizophrenia.

Some runners on the team were also participating in memory of loved ones or for personal motivations.

#TeamCardiff were supported by spectators throughout the half marathon, but received some extra kudos at mile eight. Cardiff University’s Brass Band and its mascot, Dylan the Dragon, were there to uplift spirits for the final five miles.

The runners were rewarded with free massages after the race, courtesy of the university’s physiotherapy students, of course.

Cardiff Uni said: “We’re so grateful to all our #TeamCardiff runners as well as the volunteers who made it such a fantastic event. Diolch.”

If you’d like to fundraise for Cardiff University research, you can join one of their numerous running events in 2026, including The Barcelona full and half marathon, The Paris Half Marathon, and 10k events in Cardiff, Porthcawl and Barry.
