The Springboks could find themselves in the group of death yet again in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
South Africa are about to know which teams they will face in the group stages of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
So, lets take a look at the worst-case scenario for Rassie Erasmus and Siya Kolisi’s charges.
WORST-POSSIBLE GROUP FOR THE SPRINGBOKS AT 2027 RWC
The Springboks could be grouped with hosts Australia, rivals Argentina and Japan or Georgia in what would be the group of death at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
This is because Australia, who lie in 7th position in the latest World Rankings, are the hosts. Meaning, they will be drawn first as the first team in Pool A. So, one of the top seeds (South Africa, New Zealand, England, Ireland and France) will be drawn with Australia in group A.
Meanwhile, the rise of the English has resulted in Los Pumas dropping to seventh. Meanwhile, Scotland has dropped to ninth with Fiji rising into eighth position. This means that Argentina, Scotland or Fiji could be drawn as one of the Springboks’ opponents too.
Meanwhile, Japan or Georgia are arguably the toughest band 3 opponents the Springboks could be drawn with. Finally, the toughest opponent from Band 4 is likely Samoa.
THE FOUR BANDS CONFIRMED FOR THE DRAW
Band 1 – South Africa, New Zealand, England, Ireland and France.
Band 2 – Australia, Argentina, Fiji, Scotland, Italy, Wales and Japan
Band 3 – Georgia, Spain, USA, Uruguay, Chile and Tonga
Band 4 – Samoa, Portugal, Romania, Hong Kong China, Zimbabwe and Canada
Please note: As mentioned, Australia will be drawn first as the first team in Group A. Thereafter, one team from each band will be drawn.
Ultimately, there will be six groups of four teams in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
