About the Position
The Trainee Inspector PANS-OPS/Cartography role is designed to train candidates in the validation, approval, and oversight of instrument flight procedures and aeronautical charts in accordance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
Successful candidates will gain hands-on experience in flight procedure design, aeronautical charting, safety oversight, and regulatory compliance within South Africa’s aviation framework.
Key Responsibilities
Oversight – Instrument Flight Procedures & Aeronautical Cartography Organisations
- Participate in inspection, auditing, and certification of procedure design organisations and aeronautical chart service providers.
- Monitor compliance of certified organisations with ICAO SARPs, SA-CARs, and CATS.
- Contribute to SACAA’s external compliance obligations.
Validation – Instrument Flight Procedures & Aeronautical Cartography
- Receive training in validating and approving instrument flight procedures and aeronautical charts.
- Validate information for publication in AIP SUPs, AICs, and AIP.
- Verify and approve aeronautical information on South African WAC charts.
Design – Instrument Flight Procedures
- Be trained in designing Instrument Flight Procedures as per ICAO SARPs and local regulations.
Regulation Development & Review
- Participate in the development and review of technical standards and regulations.
- Provide input to SACAA, CARCOM, NASCOM, and other external stakeholders.
- Assist in developing technical guidance material for procedure design and charting organisations.
Liaison and Consultation
- Participate in safety initiatives within the PANS-OPS section.
- Liaise with certified procedure design and aeronautical charting service providers.
Minimum Requirements
Education
Minimum:
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- A pilot qualification with an Instrument Flight (IF) rating and/or an ATC/ATSO qualification
Ideal:
- Completion of the following courses:
- PANS-OPS Basic Course
- Safety Management System Course
- State Safety Programme Course
Experience
- Minimum 5 years as a qualified Pilot (with IF rating) and/or qualified ATC/ATSO.
Additional Information
All SACAA appointments are subject to Section 98 of the Civil Aviation Act (Act 13 of 2009). Successful candidates will undergo security vetting.
