Sol Plaatje University has announced the appointment of Thebe Ikalafeng as its new Chancellor, a move hailed as a significant milestone for the Northern Cape’s leading higher education institution.
Ikalafeng, a globally respected brand strategist and Alumnus of the region, officially commenced his five-year tenure on 16 January 2026.
The appointment represents a homecoming for the Kimberley-born leader.
Having built an international reputation as a champion for African brand excellence, Ikalafeng now returns to his roots to provide strategic oversight and prestige to the university.
His term will focus on strengthening SPU’s position as a hub for innovation in the heart of the Northern Cape.
He recently joined Nzinga Qunta on Kaya Biz to discuss his vision for the university, emphasizing a commitment to academic excellence and regional development.
