The Siz The World team recently weighed in on revelations by D’Angelo’s son, Michael Eugene Archer Jr, who shared that his father never told him he was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer. D’Angelo kept the diagnosis from him to protect him, as he had only recently lost his mother, Angie Stone.
In light of this, Sizwe asked his team and the Kaya 959 audience whether it is ever acceptable to lie to children in an effort to protect them.
Mpho Maboi said there are things that are age-appropriate and others that are circumstance-appropriate.
“In this particular instance I can understand why the father chose not to tell him, because he was already dealing with a lot emotionally. The last thing I want is for you to feel like your world has to stop because mine is about to stop,” she said.
She added that there is always a level of protection when children are young, and that parenting often involves balancing honesty without robbing them of their childhood.
Julliet Joseph believes that children today are different from how many of us were raised.
“They are capable of making sense of things we might have struggled to understand at their age. I always tell my daughter everything that is appropriate for her age,” Julliet said.
