Severe thunderstorms are set to batter KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal residents are being urged to prepare for severe weather conditions as a shortwave trough passes over the country, deepening into the central interior.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers across most parts of the province on Sunday.

Weather: Thunderstorms and damaging winds

According to the SAWS forecast, the storms are expected to be intense, bringing “heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail.”

These severe conditions could trigger flooding in low-lying areas, while overflowing streams and rivers may pose a threat to lives and property. Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously and avoid crossing flooded roads.

The weather service warned that “flooding of roads and bridges as well as formal and informal settlements” could occur, with hail likely to cause damage to vehicles, roofs, and other infrastructure. Emergency services across KwaZulu-Natal are on standby to assist affected communities.

Travel Disruptions and Safety Precautions

Residents should anticipate “major travel disruptions including route obstructions and incidents,” SAWS said. The public is encouraged to secure loose items, unplug electrical appliances during lightning strikes, and stay indoors whenever possible.

Local authorities have been urged to monitor areas prone to flash floods and to provide early warnings to communities at risk. Damage or loss of property, particularly in informal settlements, remains a key concern.

Communities Urged to Stay Alert

Residents are encouraged to follow updates from the South African Weather Service and local municipalities throughout the day. Community leaders are also being asked to share weather alerts widely to prevent loss of life.
