Severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfall expected in Gauteng

Residents in Gauteng face a heightened risk of severe thunderstorms as unstable weather patterns persist over the central and northeastern parts of the country. The South African Weather Service has issued warnings that disruptive rainfall may intensify, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding and storm-related damage.

Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said the province remains under close watch as conditions evolve.

“We are still expecting isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over the central, northeastern as well as the eastern part of the country,” Zonke said.

Warnings issued for disruptive rainfall

Weather authorities warned that disruptive rainfall could become severe thunderstorms over Gauteng and the Free State. These conditions may affect road travel, informal settlements, and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Zonke cautioned residents to remain vigilant.

“That warning of disruptive rainfall is becoming severe thunderstorms over Gauteng,” she said.

Temperatures remain warm despite storms

Despite the storm risk, temperatures in Gauteng will stay relatively warm. Johannesburg recorded an overnight low of 16°C, with temperatures expected to peak at around 25°C. While the warmth may feel comfortable, it can contribute to atmospheric instability, increasing thunderstorm intensity.

“We are seeing overnight temperatures flattening out, with Johannesburg on an overnight low of 16,” Zonke noted.
