Security tightened ahead of Malema’s court appearance

Authorities have tightened security around the East London Magistrates Court ahead of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s court appearance.

The court has summoned Malema to appear for pre-sentencing proceedings after convicting him of discharging a firearm during the party’s fifth anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in 2018.

Conviction linked to Malema’s Mdantsane rally

The court found Malema guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment.

The conviction stems from an incident at Sisa Dukashe Stadium, where Malema fired a gun during the EFF’s anniversary event.

Thousands of EFF supporters have gathered in East London and are expected to march towards the magistrates court ahead of the proceedings.

On Thursday night, supporters held a vigil in the city in solidarity with Malema. Many wore the party’s red regalia, sang struggle songs, and carried placards.

EFF claims political motive

EFF members have described the case as politically motivated and aimed at silencing the party.

The organisation has vowed to stand by its leader throughout the legal process.

Malema has indicated that he will appeal against any sentence imposed by the court.

Malema has bolstered his legal team by appointing senior advocate Thembeka Ngcukayithobi.

The pre-sentencing proceedings will determine whether he faces direct imprisonment or an alternative sentence.
