Section of popular Cape beach to be closed throughout festive season

The City of Cape Town has confirmed that Mosterd’s Bay in Strand will be closed from 15 December 2025 to 15 January 2026.

The temporary closure comes as construction on the second phase of the Strand seawall project ramps up.

City officials say the decision is purely precautionary, aimed at keeping beachgoers safe while heavy machinery and contractors operate in the area. The affected section runs between the Strand swimming pool and Norman Road.

Where can beachgoers go instead?

Holidaymakers won’t have to go far to find an alternative spot, though. The closest safe swimming zone will be near the Strand Surf Lifesaving Club, where lifeguards will be on duty throughout the season.

Those looking to fish or walk their dogs can head east of Norman Road, towards Greenways.

Deputy Mayor and Mayco Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, urged residents to cooperate with the temporary restrictions.

“Neighbourhood watches and security will be on site to guide visitors to the nearest available beach to the east of Norman Road or west of Strand Pavillion throughout the upcoming holiday period,” he said.

“We are working on this seawall that is intended to protect this pristine beach for generations to come, and I want to thank the public for their ongoing support.”

Life’s a beach, but there are rules

Ward councillor and Subcouncil 8 chairperson Chantal Cerfontein used the opportunity to reiterate the City’s water-safety guidelines, especially as thousands are expected to flock to the coast over December and January.

She reminded beachgoers to follow the four golden water rules:

  • Swim only where lifeguards are on duty
  • Stay between the red and yellow flags
  • Be aware of rip currents
  • Avoid swimming under the influence and keep a close eye on children

The public has also been asked to pay attention to any public advisory signage that may be placed on beaches.
