Search for missing British tourist in Mkhuze called off

The search for 71-year-old British missing tourist Elaine McSorley in Mkhuze, northern KwaZulu-Natal, has been called off after more than a week of intensive efforts. Elaine was last seen leaving a hotel on 27 September 2025 with her 81-year-old partner. Her partner turned back due to the heat, but Elaine continued alone and did not return.

LAST SEEN NEAR THE DAM

A map Elaine had been using was found abandoned near the hotel the following day. Ground and aerial searches involved police, volunteers, and local rescue teams, including helicopters, drones, fixed-wing aircraft, K9 units, community policing forum members, and multiple search and rescue groups. Despite the extensive operation, no trace of the missing tourist was found, leading authorities to call off the physical search.

COMMUNITY REMAINS HOPEFUL FOR MISSING TOURIST

The disappearance has left the local community deeply concerned. Residents and fellow tourists joined the search, showing solidarity and support. Although the official search has ended, Elaine’s family, friends, and the Mkhuze community remain hopeful that any new information could provide closure.

SEARCH TEAMS SEEK HELP

IPSS Search and Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick confirmed that the week-long search yielded no results. “uMkhuze SAPS will continue to investigate this matter,” she said. “We urge anyone with information to come forward. Even the smallest detail could prove crucial.”

Elaine’s disappearance remains distressing for her loved ones and the wider community. Authorities continue to offer support while emphasizing the importance of reporting any information. The incident also serves as a reminder of the potential risks for tourists in remote areas, particularly under extreme heat and challenging terrain.
