Scorching temperatures expected in Gauteng

Residents across Gauteng have been urged to remain vigilant as dry and windy conditions continue to affect large parts of the interior, increasing the risk of veld fires. While the province itself will experience mostly scorching temperatures, the regional pattern points to dangerous fire conditions stretching towards the Northern Cape, North West and Free State.

Mpho Rasimphi, a forecaster, warned that communities should take early action when they notice any signs of fire.

“It’s dry and windy over those places for today, so please, if you do see any sign of fire, do report to the local authorities,” Rasimphi said.

Scorching temperatures during the day

Gauteng will enjoy relatively mild conditions compared to other provinces, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 31°C. Johannesburg is expected to reach a high of around 31°C, while Pretoria could reach about 33°C.

According to Rasimphi, the night will be cooler across much of the country.

“It is going to be a relatively cool night over most of the country, we are talking 17 in Johannesburg,” he said.

Isolated showers expected

Although Gauteng will not experience widespread rainfall, isolated showers and thunderstorms may develop in certain areas. These brief storms could provide temporary cooling but are unlikely to significantly change the dry conditions affecting the region.

Rasimphi noted that parts of the interior may still feel hot despite the mild classification.

“Most of that interior area is going to be a hot day,” he said.

With mild temperatures offering comfort but dry winds posing risks, Gauteng residents are encouraged to stay alert and informed.
