Scholar minibus driver responsible for tragic accident NAMED

The 22-year-old driver of a scholar transport minibus taxi involved in a fatal collision in which 14 learners died, has been named.

The driver, Ayanda “Biggie” Dludla, appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on 14 counts of culpable homicide, as well as charges of reckless and negligent driving.

The matter has been postponed to Thursday, 5 March for further investigations.

Footage shows that Dludla had overtaken more than three vehicles at once on a narrow road before crashing into a truck in the oncoming lane.

Remain in hospital

The charges follow the devastating crash that occurred on Monday, in which 12 learners died at the scene.

Two additional learners who were critically injured in the collision later died in hospital on Thursday morning, bringing the total death toll to 14.

Four other learners remain in hospital, one of whom has been discharged from ICU.

Calls for stricter enforcement

The incident has once again sparked renewed outrage over the safety of scholar transport services, with calls for stricter oversight and enforcement of roadworthiness and driver compliance.

The case is expected to continue as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain ongoing.
