SASSA urges applicants to use own number for R370 SRD grant

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has appealed to all COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applicants to ensure they use cell phone numbers registered under their names when applying for the R370 grant. The agency said this step is vital to protect beneficiaries and streamline the payment process.

“All applicants and beneficiaries must be aware that using your number will assist to monitor, check the progress of the application and receive notifications from the Agency that might need the applicant or beneficiary’s attention,” SASSA said in a statement.

The agency highlighted that these notifications include important messages related to verification and application updates. Without completing the verification process, applications will remain unsuccessful, and no grants will be paid.

Verification key to preventing fraud

According to SASSA, the verification process ensures that grants reach the correct individuals while protecting public funds from fraudulent activity.

“When the banking details do not belong to the applicant, the system will not verify the payment,” the agency explained.

SASSA said applicants should take personal responsibility for the information they provide to avoid unnecessary delays. Once an applicant’s banking details have been verified and confirmed, the payment will be processed during the next pay cycle.

The agency added that accurate cell phone and banking information enables its systems to communicate effectively throughout the process, reducing the risk of identity theft claims.

How to apply for the SRD grant

SASSA reminded applicants that the application process can be completed online through its official website. Applicants must select either the “South African ID Holders” or “Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders” option and follow the prompts.

Those who require assistance can contact the agency’s toll-free line at 0800 60 10 11 during working hours from Monday to Friday.
