Five men, attempting to pose as police officers, have been arrested in Daveyton following a dramatic chase on the N12 highway. The suspects, aged 28 to 34, were apprehended after an attempted hijacking and were found to be in possession of genuine South African Police Service (SAPS) uniforms and equipment.
The incident began on Tuesday when a 36-year-old motorist narrowly avoided what he correctly suspected was a trap. The victim’s vehicle was reportedly blocked on the N12 by a white VW Golf shortly after he had offered a lift to a female pedestrian. A man in a reflective police jacket emerged from the Golf, prompting the quick-thinking driver to immediately flee the scene.
The suspects gave chase, attempting to block the victim’s car again, before Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers intervened. EMPD officers from the Daveyton precinct noticed the VW Golf being driven erratically and pulled the vehicle over.
A subsequent search of the car revealed a haul of illicit gear, including full SAPS uniforms, Community Policing Forum (CPF) jackets, a taser, cellphones, two fighting belts, a screwdriver, and a firearm license belonging to an unrelated individual. Crucially, none of the five occupants could provide proof of police affiliation.
All five men now face charges of impersonating police officers, attempted hijacking, and possession of SAPS property. They are currently being held at the Daveyton Police Station and are expected to appear in court shortly.
