  • SANTACO will host its annual prayer day in Polokwane, focusing on GBVF, taxi violence, drug abuse and road accidents.
  • The event comes amid heightened festive-season crime concerns and renewed calls for stronger government intervention against GBVF.
  • Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa is expected to attend as the country mourns recent tragedies, including deadly road crashes and ongoing taxi violence.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) will on Saturday hold an annual prayer day against Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), taxi violence, drug abuse and road accidents.

The annual prayer will be held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

This comes as the days of the festive season are nearing in South Africa, and reports show that most violent crimes and other criminal activities usually occur around this time.

The prayer also comes as women from all walks of life in South Africa decided to participate in a peaceful protest on Friday to call for the government’s serious intervention when it comes to GBVF in the country.

Reports show that fifteen women lose their lives to GBV daily in South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has since declared this phenomenon as a national crisis, something that wasn’t well accepted, as Non Profit Organisation Women For Change wants GBV to rather be declared a national disaster.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, is expected to attend the annual prayer day.

Meanwhile, this event also comes as South Africa continues to grapple with the high rate of road accidents, with the most recent tragic accident involving a bus in the Free State killing 10 people.

Taxi violence is also one of the criminal activities that continue to leave residents reeling in shock and families grieving.
