  • Robert Mugabe Jr, the son of the late former President, was charged with drug possession after being arrested for allegedly driving the wrong way down a one-way street in Harare.
  • Police allegedly found two small sachets of cannabis in his possession and subsequently arrested five other people in an alleged “syndicate linked to him.”
  • The court remanded Mr Mugabe Jr in custody on Thursday, pending a bail ruling scheduled for Friday.

Robert Mugabe Jr, the 33-year-old son of Zimbabwe’s late former President Robert Mugabe, has appeared in a Harare magistrates court charged with drug possession.

Mr Mugabe Jr was arrested on Wednesday morning after he was reportedly driving the wrong way down a one-way street, according to court documents presented during his appearance on Thursday.

Police claim they conducted a search of a black sling bag he was wearing at the time and allegedly discovered two small sachets of cannabis. The police charge sheet stated that they recovered two grams (2g) of cannabis, with an estimated street value of $30 (R570).

The arrest has led to some discrepancies regarding the alleged quantity of drugs found. A lawyer, Ashiel Mugiya, claimed that only 0.02g of cannabis was recovered from a car which had three other occupants, but it was not immediately clear if Mr Mugiya was representing Mr Mugabe Jr.

In a subsequent statement, police claimed that five other people in a “syndicate linked to him” were also arrested. During the arrests of these alleged syndicate members, police said they found 25 sachets of marijuana and six ecstasy pills. Police stated that their investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday, Mr Mugabe Jr was seen being led into the magistrates court wearing joggers and a red cap, while reportedly on his phone. He was not handcuffed and was surrounded by people.

The court remanded Mr Mugabe Jr in custody following the hearing. A ruling on his application for bail is expected to be delivered on Friday.

This is not the first time the son of the former President and his widow, Grace Mugabe, has had a run-in with the law. In 2023, Mr Mugabe Jr was arrested over allegations that he damaged property and spat on a police officer during a party in the capital. He was later freed after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement with the complainant, who was a friend.
