  • A joint operation by the RTMC and police agencies will cause temporary road closures and significant delays across key routes in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni this Friday and Saturday.
  • The action, scheduled for 9am-1pm on Friday and morning/afternoon slots on Saturday, aims to enhance public safety, enforce traffic compliance, and conduct vehicle inspections.
  • Motorists are strongly advised to check alternative routes like the M57 and Beyers Naudé Drive, and allow extra travel time to avoid high-security routes like the N1, N3, and M1.

Motorists across Gauteng are being warned to expect significant traffic disruptions this weekend as the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) launches a major, coordinated law enforcement operation.

The blitz, running on Friday, 24 October and Saturday, 25 October 2025, will involve the RTMC working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), and Metropolitan Police Departments (JMPD, EMPD, and TMPD) from Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane.

Details of the operation

The joint action will result in temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and intermittent stoppages across key national and urban routes.

The RTMC stated that the measures are “essential to enhance public safety, enforce traffic compliance, and support ongoing traffic law enforcement initiatives,” including vehicle inspections and congestion management. Priority access for emergency and essential services will be maintained throughout.

Road users are strongly advised to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time, and consider alternative routes. Traffic officers, clear signage, and real-time updates will be used to guide the public.

Affected routes and schedule

Operations will target high-security routes, encompassing major national highways and central urban arteries in the City of Tshwane, City of Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni.

Date Time Area Action
Friday, 24 October 2025 9am – 1pm Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni Roads will be closed across listed networks.
Saturday, 25 October 2025 8am – 10am (Morning) & 1pm – 2:30pm (Afternoon) Johannesburg Roads will be closed across listed networks.

Key affected routes include:

  • National/Regional Routes: N1, N3, N12, M1, R21, R24, R512.
  • Major Urban Arterials: Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Jan Smuts Avenue, Oxford Road, Corlett Drive, Melrose Boulevard, Rand Show Road, Nasrec Road, and Golden Highway.

Recommended alternative routes

To mitigate the impact, the RTMC has suggested several alternative travel options:

  • Johannesburg to Pretoria: Use the M57 as an alternative to the R21.
  • West/North-West Travel: Consider Beyers Naudé Drive instead of the R512 or N1.
  • East-West Travel: Use smaller regional roads through Germiston, Kempton Park, or Bedfordview in place of the R24/N12.
  • Within Sandton/Rosebank: Use side streets parallel to Jan Smuts, Oxford, or Rivonia Road (e.g., Sandton Drive, 11th Avenue).
  • Southern Johannesburg: Use Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Crownwood Road, Soweto Highway, or the N17.

Ride Joburg: Major Johannesburg road closures expected on October 26

On October 26, motorists in Johannesburg should expect major traffic disruptions and road closures due to the Ride Joburg cycle race, featuring 97km and 35km routes through numerous suburbs including Soweto, Braamfontein, Parktown, Randburg, and Fourways.

Key road closures, in effect from approximately 4:00 AM to 4:00 PM, will impact routes like the Soweto Highway, parts of the M1, M2, and N17, as well as Nasrec Road, which closes overnight on October 25.
