Instagram seems to be changing things weekly at this point, but this harrowing bug which notifies people about Instagram DM screenshots is… not ok.
The new disappearing messages update came with a warning that users would be notified if either person screenshots the chat. But some users reported these notifications on normal DM chats – so what the hell is going on?
So, will Instagram notify you if you screenshot a direct message chat?
This is something I Google once a month because I’m chronically anxious I’m going to get caught out. I’m actually terrified that Instagram is going to change the rules – so does it tell the other person if you screenshot your intimate chats?!
Instagram is not supposed to notify users about screenshots in direct message chats unless “disappearing messages” is turned off. However, some users reported getting the warning message when disappearing messages weren’t on. Umm, not cool.
If your phone is notifying the other person, it’s probably a bug and should sort itself out.

To ensure you’re not going to get caught out, make sure you turn disappearing messages turned off by following these steps:
- Open the chat where vanish mode is on
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen
- This will turn off vanish mode, and the chat will return to normal
You can tell if disappearing messages are on as the chat will notify you at the bottom. Instagram shouldn’t notify either user of a DM screenshot so long as this is turned off.
Whoever would want disappearing messages on in the first place is a menace – what is this, Snapchat? I fear the safest option is to ban screenshots altogether. What do you mean I’ve just been blasted in the chat for taking a cheeky screenie? Is nothing sacred anymore? Bloody hell guys.
