It was a heart-pounding match to watch – literally – for Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus. Like many South Africans, the rugby boss was on the edge of his seat as South Africa played France over the weekend.
Despite being given a red card and playing with just 14 men, the Boks beat Les Bleus 32-17 at Stade de France.
RASSIE ERASMUS REVEALS ABNORMAL HEART RATE
On his X account, Rassie Erasmus revealed how the high intensity of the Springboks’ game against France had taken an impact on his health.
The Bok coach posted a pic of his smartwatch, which flashed the warning: “Abnormal high heart rate detected”.
Rassie later thanked South Africans for their unwavering support.
The 53-year-old marked his 50th test cap as Springboks head coach. The match also coincided with captain Siya Kolisi’s 100th test cap.
‘WE WANTED TO WIN THIS GAME’
Speaking after the game, Rassie Erasmus revealed how the Springboks were hungry to beat their French rivals, whom they last played against at the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals.
He said, “We desperately wanted to win this game. I know France are ranked fifth in the world. People will say you’re ranked number one so you should beat the team ranked fifth.
“Playing here, the atmosphere – I think the French can be so proud of their supporters. For us it was intimidating, but luckily we’d been through this.
He added: “There was definitely no calmness, but making plans – mostly the assistant coaches and the players – and unfortunately, some guys had to sacrifice. All credit to the whole group.”
