Rassie Erasmus calls on Springbok fans to fill Wembley Stadium

The world champion Springboks will kick off their five-Test end-of-year tour with a match against Japan at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 1 November.

The match will start at 16:10 local time which is 18:10 (SA time).

Rassie Erasmus calls on Springbok fans

Ahead of the clash, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus called on all South African fans – and foes – to join him in the stands at Wembley.

“To all our supporters – and even those who does not support us – we’re playing Japan at Wembley Stadium,” Erasmus said.

“For us, it’s a obviously a great honour to play at a stadium like that, but also to play against a Japanese team that’s certainly grown a lot since 1995 when I saw them play the first time in Bloemfontein.

“Obviously they’ve beaten us before (at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in Brighton).

“We would love you to come out and support us and try and fill the stadium.

“It will definitely be a spectacle and a hard match. We know how good they have become and we know that’s also good preparation for us before the end-of-year tour.

“So hopefully we put up a good show and it would be lovely to have all of you at the stadium,” Erasmus added.

‘Miracle of Brighton’

The match will be only the fourth ever meeting between South Africa and Japan.

The first ever clash between the two nations took place – unforgettably for Springbok fans – during the 2015 Rugby World Cup when Eddie Jones’s Brave Blossoms upset South Africa 34-32 in the ‘Miracle of Brighton’.

Four years later, the Springboks did win two Tests within the space of seven weeks against Japan, firstly 41-7 in Saitama and then 26-3 in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Tokyo.

Date Result Venue
19 Sept 2015 Lost 34-32 Brighton Community Stadium, Brighton
6 Sept 2019 Won 41-7 Kumagaya Rugby Stadium, Saitama
20 Oct 2019 Won 26-3 Tokyo Stadium, Chofu, Tokyo

Following the Japan Test, the Springboks will take on France at Stade de France in Paris (8 November), Italy at the Allianz Stadium in Turin (15 November), Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (22 November), and Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff (29 November).
