  • Senzo Mchunu says he briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa after disbanding the Political Killings Task Team.
  • He told Parliament that Ramaphosa accepted his decision.
  • Mchunu is currently on leave amid allegations of interference and protecting criminal figures.

Suspended Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu revealed that he briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa on his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team, after issuing the letter to disband the team on New Year’s Eve last year.

He was answering questions at Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Friday, about criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference in the justice system.

Mchunu said he does not remember the exact date or length of the meeting he had with the President regarding his order to disband the team.

He revealed that he requested a time slot to brief Ramaphosa, and the President accepted the briefing.

“He agreed with the briefing I gave him,” said Mchunu.

“It was not an elaborate kind of a presentation and a discussion. It was just a briefing that I’ve taken that decision,” he told the committee.

He further told the committee that the President agreed with his decision.

Mchunu, who has since been placed on leave by Ramaphosa, faces accusations that he disbanded the KZN-based PKTT to halt investigations into a drug cartel.

In July, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of interfering in police work and allegedly protecting underworld figures.

The parliamentary inquiry is set to resume on Tuesday.
