  • President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deadline for the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into alleged attempts to halt the prosecution of TRC cases.
  • The Commission, chaired by retired Judge Sisi Khampepe, must now submit its final report by the new date of 31 July 2026.
  • The extension was granted due to operational delays, including a late start, outstanding documents, and the upcoming judicial recess.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted an extension to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating allegations of efforts to impede the investigation and prosecution of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases.

The Presidency confirmed on Monday that the Commission, established to probe the alleged delays in justice, must now submit its final report by 31 July 2026.

The Commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Judge Sisi Khampepe, was established in May 2025. Its assisting commissioners are retired Northern Cape Judge President Frans Diale Kgomo and Advocate Andrea Gabriel SC.

A statement from The Presidency noted: “President Ramaphosa says the extension will aid the Commission to complete its work without any further delay and to provide the country with a full account of the circumstances that gave rise to the establishment of the Commission.”

President Ramaphosa acknowledged several operational issues that necessitated the extension.

These factors included a delayed start to the Commission’s proceedings, outstanding documentary responses required for evidence, anticipated applications for cross-examination by implicated parties, and the upcoming judicial recess scheduled from mid-December 2025 to early January 2026.
