Quiet Cape Town suburb rocked by murder-suicide

A quiet Monte Vista neighbourhood has been left reeling after the bodies of a police officer and his girlfriend were found inside their home last week in what is believed to be a murder-suicide.

The tragedy unfolded in Baracouta Street prompting an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

Gunshots

According to Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, neighbours reported hearing several gunshots around 20:00, but police were not called at the time.

The following day, at about 15:00, the woman’s colleagues visited her home after she failed to report for duty.

“Her colleagues spoke to her sister, who stays at the same address. The sister went to the female deceased’s room and found her lying on her bed with multiple gunshot wounds. The male deceased, a SAPS member, was lying on the floor,” Shuping said.

Failed to arrive

Both victims were in their 40s, and initial findings suggest the woman was shot six times in the upper body, while the officer had a single gunshot wound to the head.

The officer, a member of the Bellville Crime Prevention Unit, had reportedly been due to report for a night shift that same evening but failed to arrive.

Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Abdullah Sydney said that the case is being treated as a murder and remains in a “very sensitive stage of investigation.”

The Ipid has since taken over the case to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
