  • Deputy Minister Peace Mabe has called for stronger protection of creatives following the fatal shooting of DJ Warras in the Johannesburg CBD.
  • Police have not established a motive, though a link to hijacked buildings has not been ruled out, and no arrests have been made.
  • Mabe has urged law enforcement to act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.

Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Peace Mabe has called for greater protection of creatives in South Africa following the tragic killing of popular broadcaster DJ Warras.

The 40-year-old was fatally shot in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday, 16 December 2025.

Gauteng police have not yet established a motive, although they have not ruled out the possibility that the incident may be linked to hijacked buildings.

No arrests have been made, but police say one suspect captured on CCTV is described as an African male with dreadlocks.

Mabe expressed deep sorrow and outrage over what she described as the brutal and senseless killing of a respected figure in the creative industry.

“DJ Warras was not only a gifted broadcaster and storyteller, but a cultural connector whose voice carried joy, humour and meaning into the lives of many South Africans,” she said.

She added that the killing serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence that continues to claim lives that positively contribute to South Africa’s democracy, creative economy and social fabric.

The Deputy Minister said DJ Warras’ death should be viewed not only as a personal loss to his loved ones, but as a national failure to adequately protect life.

She extended her heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and listeners, and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure swift justice.

“We call on law enforcement agencies to act decisively and transparently. Accountability is essential, not only for his loved ones, but for public confidence in the rule of law,” Mabe said.
