- A chlorine gas shortage has forced the temporary closure of some Pretoria municipal swimming pools during the festive season.
- The City of Tshwane says the shortage is beyond its control and affects water safety standards.
- Teams are working with suppliers to restore chlorine deliveries and reopen the affected pools as soon as possible.
With the festive season in full swing, many South African families are heading to swimming pools to cool off and enjoy the holidays, but for Pretoria residents, those plans may take an unexpected knock.
A shortage of chlorine gas is temporarily affecting operations at several municipal pools across the City of Tshwane. Chlorine is a vital component for maintaining safe and hygienic swimming water, and without it, pools cannot operate.
City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo says that since the start of the swimming and gala season in September, the municipality’s Swimming Pools Section under Community Services has worked tirelessly to ensure all facilities meet health and safety standards.
“Our teams have been consistent in monitoring, testing and treating water to keep facilities safe and ready for public use,” said Mashigo.
However, the city has now been notified by contracted chlorine-gas suppliers across Gauteng of an unforeseen delay in deliveries due to a shortage of operational cylinders in the broader market.
“As a municipality, we prioritise the health and safety of all swimmers. Chlorine gas is essential for disinfecting pool water and ensuring protection against waterborne risks. While our staff continues to implement all other aspects of pool maintenance, the safe operation of facilities cannot be compromised,” Mashigo added.
Pools currently affected by the temporary closure are the Saulsville Swimming Pool and the Tjaart Van Vuuren Swimming Pool
Mashigo assured the public that all relevant teams are working with suppliers to expedite deliveries and restore full operations as soon as possible.
