The beloved Axe Valley Wildlife Park in Axminster, East Devon, said it will close by the end of this week, Friday, October 10.
In a statement posted to Facebook the family-run zoo said: “It is with a heavy heart that we share some sad news.”
The post continued: “As many of you may have heard in the news, we are not the only business facing these difficult times.
“Unfortunately, it has become financially unviable for us to continue operating.”
The zoo said all the animals, including zebras, meerkats, flamingos and much more, will be rehomed in line with animal welfare regulations.
Visitors could book one hour experiences to get the chance to work alongside zookeepers, looking after the rare animals and finishing with a handling session.
The wildlife park even offered the opportunity to be a keeper for a day for a chance to get extra close to the animals.
“When we opened our gates 17 years ago, we could never have imagined the wonderful journey ahead
“The thousands of amazing visitors, school trips, and loyal members who became part of our zoo family.
“We are so proud of the wide variety of animals we’ve cared for over the years, each one holding a special place in our hearts.”
They added: “We also want to take this moment to thank our incredible staff and volunteers,
“Past and present, who have worked tirelessly with love, dedication, and passion to care for our animals and welcome our visitors.”
The post has been shared 259 times and comments flooded in from visitors.

“You, and your wonderful staff will be sadly missed, and will hold a very special place in my heart.
“I can only imagine the heartbreak you are going through having to have made this decision.”
A second comment said: “So sorry to read this we loved bringing the grandchildren to such a lovely zoo, they loved it there.”
